冷凍式干燥機使用制冷劑氣體，將壓縮空氣冷卻至略高于水結(jié)冰的溫度。然后除去冷凝水份并重新加熱干燥的空氣，得到露點穩(wěn)定的壓縮空氣送入管路中，用于氣動工具、氣缸、閥門和各種工藝。除了要對水份干燥之外，要求嚴苛的工藝流程都會先對壓縮空氣進行除油除塵過濾，然后進行干燥，干燥后再對氣體進行過濾。確保產(chǎn)出的壓縮空氣干凈，無色無味。
與空氣壓縮機非常相似，壓縮空氣干燥機取決于公司在何處以及如何使用壓縮空氣。例如在南方的空氣濕度與北方空氣濕度和溫度完全不同，另外還有不同工藝對水份的要求，配備不同類型的壓縮空氣干燥機。
